ReplyDeleteNowadays animated videos bring a whole new dimension to the classrooms. I can’t picture myself watching an animated educational video when I was in elementary school; probably because it did not even exist at that time. However, I could remember the excitement of my partners and mine when we were brought to the library to watch a movie. Bearing that on mind, I think the enthusiasm I experienced while watching the movie would be the same for my future students when watching an animated video.
ReplyDeleteIn today´s world everybody is emerged on the world of animation in different forms and degrees. But, the new generations, those you teach at school and high school levels, are even more involve in it; young people really enjoy watching all these kind of animated cartoons, they feel attracted to them, they talk about them, they imitate the drawings. Then, why wouldn't you implement such appealing aspect in the teaching and learning process? Animated videos portray real life situations, and such “simulations provide a way to bring fascinating, real-world problems into the classroom” (Let’s go into the Classroom, Constructivist teaching with Technology, page 14). Thus, adapting environments within an animated video can allow a more accurate way to establish learning platforms for students.
As a future teacher I would implement animated videos in classroom. I think this is a clever idea to engage students in the topic. Besides that, it is a way to show students you are up-dated with the new tendencies there are. For instance, if I were teaching sports I would create a animated video, as an introduction to the topic, with some characters that seem to be the same age as my students, and have them talking about sports, while unconsciously my students learn the new terms , and get thrilled while watching the video. Then, the video will help as a constant framework to develop the rest of the lesson.
A way to relate this with my own life is by wondering how many of us would have liked to have this kind of resources when we were at High School? Undoubtedly, if a teacher would have prepared a video of this kind for his/her class, the topic would have been pretty interesting for the class in general and even more if we take into account the multiple intelligences due to technology goes straight to the point with them. Therefore, many students with different intelligences would have understood the topics taught easier. When you use this kind of tools as a teacher, when you provide a variety of resources to your students, when you show that you really plan a class before developing it, your students will notice it and the results (for those who are interested on your subject) will be just great. That’s why, as a teacher I would really like to implement goanimate videos. I think that the tool is very useful for most of the topics contemplated in the MEP`s syllabus, by taking such aspect into account I’d like to develop activities like playing the video and then ask critical questions to the students. With this same tool, the students could also provide their answers by doing posters and presenting them to the class. Another way to use the videos would be by role playing what they just watched, being the ones who represented the video in the most similar way, the winners. Without any doubt, by implementing these kind of activities, the teacher would be just a guide in the process and the student the main protagonist of his/her knowledge. At the same time, the student can develop his/her cognitive skills by means of Critical Pedagogy defined by Larry Ferlazzo (2012) in his article Eight Ways to Use Video With English-Language Learners as the “banking approach towards education, where the teacher deposits information into his/her students”. This is exactly what the teacher would do by using goanimate videos; it is just to show the video and then a variety of activities could be done by using Critical Pedagogy and as it was said before, the student plays the main role in the development of those activities.
ReplyDeleteNowadays Teachers have a lot of technological tools which they can implement in their lesson. Nonetheless, it is a great option in order to motivate their students because most of them love to interact with the updated technological tool. Nevertheless, the uses of this software imply that the teacher must be an updated person toward the use of that.
ReplyDeleteMark McKinnon argued in his article Teaching technologies: teaching English using video that the video works as a listening tool which enhances the listening experience for our students. I completely agree with the author because it really happens I our classrooms.
On the other hand, as teachers we need to be very creative due to I would like to share with all of you two different options that we can implement with the use of GoAnimate Video.
Firstly, it is a wonderful option in order to teach them greetings and leave taking. You can create a video in which the characters use some leave takings and in that way your students can identify those leave takings and list them. After that they have to create a role play using those leave takings that they listened in the video.
Secondly, teacher prepares some grids for his/her students and creates a video about parts of the house. Each student has to complete the grid individually according to what they listen in the video and the clue that they have on the grid.
One of the major problems for teachers is to find high quality videos related to a specific topic, it is always difficult to find an appropriate source of information to support the topics we usually teach. Audio tracks are usually boring for students after they have repeatedly done such kind of exercises, videos are more attractive for them but they are not always available for teachers. In our goanimate project we succeeded incorporating video to an audio track regarding a topic. In ´Learning and Instruction´(pag 11), the author states that ¨the effectiveness of a lesson plan depends on the internal responses to a stimulus, the senses used...¨by using goanimate, you can have students watch, listen and read, everything at the same time. Then you are encouraging students to use the three primordial senses to understand a topic which is amazingly good. Besides that, using goanimate videos students may feel more engaged to the topic and concentrated. I think the best use I would give to goanimate in the future is enhancing audio tracks with visual aids and written support for students to understand deeper the topics. I would also use go animate videos to introduce new vocabulary to the class in an attractive way, and the best part of this resource is that students may go home and watch the material whenever they want.
ReplyDeleteTwo of the advantages of Multimedia Presentations are the active learning and the space for collaboration among students and teacher. Good videos can be very usuful in class, having the facility to create them allow us to use them as a tool in our lesson. In "Learning with multimedia tools" (pag. 308) it is explained that multimedia actively involves the learner. Calling our students´atention seems to be one of the most difficult tasks in develping a lesson. So I would use a video as a warn up activity to present the topic of food, in which they will be able to recogize some vocabulary. After watching the video students will have to draw picture of the vocabulary they were able to recognize. Students then share their drawings with the rest of the class, when teacher and students are looking at the pictures, students say the vocabulary they got. This is a way also to know how much words students master. After this activity the teacher presents the missing vocabulary. The second activity would be one in which students work in groups of three, each group will get a computer it could be a personal computer or one from their lab. What students do is to check on youtube for a video related to the topic which is food, then they need to come up with two questions and answer them with the video. Once all the groups have finished they show the video to the class and ask them the questions they cae up with. Each student writes their answers in the notebooks. According to the author of "Learning with multimedia tools" (pag. 308) "Students combine their strenghs in developing a single group effort in collaborative projects". I like the idea of this activity because it is cooperative and reinforce team work and collaboration. It is the type of activity that will keep students attention.
ReplyDeleteThe usefulness of Goanimated videos is great. As professors, we are always taught that we should work with student different learning styles. Sometimes it is really difficult to prepare an activity that involves all these styles. However multimedia materials such as Goanimated video will let us work with all the different learning styles since students will work on their listening, speaking and reading skills at the same time. Since the scenaries, characters and props are really varied we could use this tool to create almost any kind of video to teach any lesson subject. Most of the time, as teachers, we are asked to teach the standard English form, the one we found in books, media. Even if this is really important, we should also know that students will not only find standard English forms in the outside. So by choosing different accents when creating the characters we could expose students to different English accents, so they will be getting their ears used to different forms. Videos could also help students to grasp meaning in conversations and promote the learning of new vocabulary items, Swaffar and Vlatten (1997) argue that "video is a multi-sensory medium, which significantly contributes to the overall student involvement in the learning process. All of these additional elements help language students to more easily grasp the meaning of the spoken language between two or more communicators"(page 52). Therefore, base on what these authors portrated, another use I would give to Goanimated is the usage of these video settings to teach students slangs, idiomatic expressions and daily life conversation words.Because, most of the time as teachers we teach our students in a really technical ways, for example we just teach them to say How are you?, meanwhile expressions such as what`s up or how are you doing?, are two more informal ways to ask the same question, not all the students would realize this, until they face a communication problem with native speakers or more advanced learners.

How different is a class where the teacher motivates the students, for instance how different is when the teacher does not start using the board or dictating something. Technology can give that twist that we need, to our clases, it could be projecting a game with a web place or presenting a power point presentation, there are several things that can be done with technology as it said the sky is the limit! An exciting and new tool is go anímate how you can create a video from scratch with explicit objectives and vocabulary, do it in a fun way but with a specific porpuse. What is better have boring classes and students that would never pay attention or catch their attention in a easier and interesting way... That´s what allows thiis kind of programs presented to us as a controlled creative tool that our students must love, also, with this videos we are not only showing a setting or vocabulary, we can show, culture, weather, time, Greetings, social behaviors between others.. But all this benefits should be evaluated, professors and students cannot lay down completely on technology, because technology it is a tool and a system but not the education itself. As is refer about CALL, that CALL work need to be reviewed by their peer and some others academical process. To conclude technology give us the chance to improve and to become better teachers, and for the students it gives the knowledge necessary to success.
ReplyDeleteThe benefits of using GoAnimate are many; not only is a helpful technological tool, but is also an easy handled one. The most significant trait of GoAnimate is its dual function. By dual function I mean that could be used not only by teachers but also by students; for instance, in a blog, students can participate actively, but with GoAnimate they can become creators as well (not undermining blogs´ helpfulness, but enhancing GoAnimate “creator” characteristic). The reading “Learning and Instruction” talks about “project-based learning” which is “an authentic assessment model for teaching in which in which projects are used to assess student learning” (p. 17). I would definitely use GoAnimate on the basis of this model; asking for a project in which they can prove they really understand. Students could put into practice the grammar, and vocabulary learned in the class, I also will be able to assess their understanding of the topic but at the same time they will have an amusing time creating and presenting their projects.
ReplyDeleteIt is also important to say how we can apply GoAnimate for our own benefit as teachers. It is sometimes hard to find the adequate material with the very exact vocabulary that we need. We make our plans on function of the materials we were able to find and do not fully achieve the established objectives because of the lack of materials available. So, that now, and with all the technological facilities, we cannot say that we can’t find the correct materials.
What´s more catching than a video? you see students playing videos on their cell phones, tablets, play stations, dvds, computers... well, in anything that supports video playback! So, would you use it for teaching? of course! it isn't even an option, it is mandatory to do it! There are many videos we can get from different websites, the one that comes to mind almost inmediately is youtube. But we don't always find what we need, so... what if we can do it by our own means? That's the wonderful advantage of goanimate videos. You make what you need, knowing your students' needs, knowledge and context, to make it as closely personal as possible for them. That will allow you to see really interested students who will learn easily than when they work with something not catching. I've used videos in my teaching experience and they really have that effect on students, they completely become more willing to pay attention the moment they see a video, no matter what it is about.
ReplyDeleteAs mentioned in "Learning with multimedia tools" P.304, "Digital multimedia has made it possible for the learner to navigate through combinations of sights and sounds as never before" with a video you can make use of settings, clothing, characters, scripts and even sounds that relate and get the most out of a determined topic, making it easier for students to internalize that new information.
How would I use it for my classes? To make videos contextualized to the community I'm teaching in, making use of names of some of the students -being careful not to get into any trouble for that-, aiming to make it as catching as possible for students. Another example, would be to make a video that guides students into different activities, i.e. do the book's activity as homework, visit __X___ website to know about ___X___ topic, make an interview to your classmates about ___X__, so that they see the video as a guide, from a fictious caracter who is NOT gonna look like a teacher commanding them what to do, but as a friend suggesting "cool" stuff to do.
The use of GoAnimate is helpful in the area of education, but it has more benefits for teachers. If we use GoAnimate we create it the way we want and it takes a little more time creating one than just look for a video but the difference here is that when we have the video finished we will have the information we want to reinforce or introduce. Sometimes we look for a video that can help us but it could be nice but there is something that does not work a lot so it could be better if we create our own videos so we know exactly what we want. Also we as teachers have to take into account that our students learn through different intelligences, it is important to highlight that everybody has different ways to learn. In the reading learning and instruction the author says: “Gardner believes that intelligence defines not only how people acquire information but also how they process this acquired information- how they learn best” (pag 24). It means that using videos could be a better way to learn for some of our students so it is necessary to use them as a part of the class’ material.
ReplyDeleteAnother benefit that has the use of GoAnimate is that it makes the classes funniest and it helps the students to enjoy the classes. In my personal opinion I will use them in my classes, I will create my own videos to reinforce vocabulary or a topic. Also another I will encourage students to create their own videos for example when they have a presentation they could use it as a way to change the common way to present something they can be creative and use their videos.
I am totally convinced that GoAnimate videos are a great tool for teachers and also for learners that is why I will use them and I will encourage my students to use it too.
In my opinion, the use of this great tool can help teachers to educate and transmit ideas in a funny and interesting way. It is an innovative way to teach and to motivate learners at the same time, since the majority of the students are already engaged to internet and multimedia devices. As it is said in the reading called: Learning with multimedia tools, “Multimedia presentations can create multisensory learning experiences for students.” (p.305) By putting the use multimedia tools into practice, teachers can stimulate the different students’ intelligences putting aside the banking education which worries only about transmitting information to be memorized by students. Besides that, I consider teachers are not the only ones in charge of using this tool; students are also beneficiaries of creating a GoAnimate video and working directly with multimedia devices, since “It gives the student control of powerful tools in the exploration and creation of information.” (Learning with multimedia tools, p.306) This helps the students to become their own teachers and they can learn from their own experiences. Finally, a great benefit of creating a video for our own is that it can fit in any topic or vocabulary we are teaching since, sometimes, it is very difficult for us to find videos which explain the topic as we want to. As a future teacher, I would use this video-maker to teach any topic to reinforce the students’ listening skills and teach vocabulary without the need of using large lists of words for them to memorize. Also it would be useful to use this tool to reinforce the critical part of every student by doing round tables or forums in which they discuss and analyze different aspects from the video.
ReplyDeleteIn our class we have students with different intelligences and learning styles. Then, we as teachers might need strategies that integrate those learning styles and intelligences, which is the reason why goAnimate is very convenient, since it involves visual, auditory and kinesthetic aids. GoAnimate offers students an excellent platform to insert questions and respond with answers since characters interact within a scene. GoAnimate creates simulations, and as it is establish on the reading Learning with Multimedia tools, on page 14, “simulations allow students to experiment with altering the variables of a particular situation in ways that the real world does not”. Goanimate also works great for teachers to provide students with several questions that they respond to. We as teachers can support a variety of classroom needs. In my case, I might use GoAnimate for student to put their writing abilities into action, for example in a literature class, student could re-recreate an ending to a novel, create an historical scene between two characters in a period of history they are learning about. I could also use it to teach student about concepts they are learning in class, or as a presentation main vocabulary. I might use it for learners to demonstrate their speaking abilities by recording a scene in English using their own voice.
ReplyDeleteI want to start my comment by citing Forcier, in his article Learning with Multimedia Tools pointed out "The old "low-tech" slide series accompanied by synchronized audiotapes with perhaps film clips thrown in have given way to personalized "high-tech" experiences of sounds, images, animation, and movies presented to the user on a computer screen or projected in the classroom."(p.304) This quotation moves to educators to explorer another way of teaching, where videos and representations of real life is shown to the students in classes. This kind education will represent more real things in schools.
ReplyDeleteGo animate is a terrific opportunity for teachers to present the students what really they want to show in their classes because many times it is hard to get the correct video for specific topic. With go animate teacher is able to keep the main idea of the topic in a video without exaggerating and spending a lot of time in video.
As a have seen in my experience students learn a lot by seeing things in a video because it is easier for them to remember the video seen that the reading read.
My believe is that go animate helps teacher and students to focus in the main idea of a topic following and gives the option of studying in a funny way.
We see new and different technological appliances every day; those have implemented changes that became important tools in the teaching field, since we can take advantage of them by changing our lesson plans in order to introduce different ways of teaching English as a second language. We have learned that CALL offers the opportunity to work with research, development, and/or practice (See Call and its Evaluation, page 54); it means that we can introduce more important aspects in a lesson, not just learning specific vocabulary or grammar by a teacher centered class. What we can do is to look for interesting ways of teaching our topics in order to get our students’ attention. An effective tool is to use videos, here we can take into account Go Animate. This is an easy instrument that we can choose in order to present a topic. One topic that I would present by using Go Animate could be the irregular plural nouns since students have to memorize the corresponding singular and plural form of words which would be boring just to read a list of words, but by using a video would be better for students to relate images and sounds. Another way of applying this instrument is by presenting nationalities since we could use diverse animated characters In order to represent different country names, nationalities and also their costums. Also, this tool can be used by students since we could ask them to create a video about a specific topic and then present it to the class because it is easy to use and in that way we could motivate them to produce diverse material that could be applied in the future. If we ask students to create their own video, they would have to be aware of the vocabulary and grammar used, in that way they would be not only having fun but also learning English, which is our goal, in that way, they would be learning in an active way and the most important point here is that we as teachers would be just a guide during their learning process.
ReplyDeleteGo animate is fun. It would be great to use it in our classroom. Knowing how to use technology provides us an extra hand, this aid will increase students interest in learning a diverse of topics, the class would become more interactive. Certainly, students show interest for Technology and gaming, so then immersing them in classrooms where they take time to develop their characters, while the rest of the group is working on the dialogues or conversations. It is an tremendously useful source for the creation of conversations, where there isn’t material available. We can use our imagination to create new videos that stress over specific areas. however, it is necessary for teacher and students to be acquainted with this technology. People who make use of this technology have a greater view on how helpful it is for specific areas, where he/she wants to be creative using their imagination on the tasks or providing students with his/her production. It is important to mention the importance of combining this tools along with other resources so that education break the walls people create on their own against technology and its tools. It is helpful to teach people about the importance of technology and how they can make use of it. I personally find this Go animate very practical and valuable tool. It enhances our points of view on the extensive variety of tools we are not using regularly in our classrooms. Rarely I have seen teachers make use of this type of platform in all the years I have been in the learning/ teaching process. Before, technology was not view as essential as it shows to be know.
ReplyDeleteIn general, technology can supply teacher exceptionally useful tools to use in our classrooms, although we have to be aware of the economical limitations our system has. A vast number of schools and high schools are unequally equipped.
Extra examples of tools are availabre in the following links:
Deletehttp://libguides.eastern.edu/content.php?pid=328904&sid=2690636

Since technology has been vastly introduced to expand education to almost everybody and to the farthest locations, more and more gadgets appear every day in order to collaborate and make more dynamic the teaching and learning process. Outside and inside the classroom scenario, most teachers and learners have access to several software packages, devices, and online platforms, where instructors can assign different tasks or projects, then, students have the chance “to grow up” their knowledge in such innovative and creative way, with enthusiasm, partnership and determination.
ReplyDeleteForcier (p.304) (Learning with multimedia tools reading) states that “multimedia is certainly multidimensional and multisensory and has a great potential for involving the user regardless of learning style”, in other words, multimedia has no boundaries in the point the people can use it in the way they consider will be useful for them to accomplish their learning goals and by the same time, to stimulate senses and skills. GoAnimate is a nice example of multimedia platforms in which learners can create their own videos using their creativity and giving life to their ideas. As an English language teacher, I would invite my students to create a GoAnimate video to illustrate their day-to-day activities to other classmates. Another use I have found for GoAnimate videos is when there will be a discussion class about any topic; students have a different resource where they can express themselves by using multimedia.

ReplyDeleteThe spread of technology throughout the world have made people wonder wether it should or should not be included in the learning process, specifically in the classroom. However, recent studies have shown that by incorporating multimedia tools in the classroom, students seems to have benefits in matters of intercultural competence and expressiveness. According to Jiang & Ramsay, cited in Dattar ed. al, "students may feel more comfortable asking questions and expressing ideas to their teachers and other students in online environments" (2005). Besides, the reading "CALL and its evaluation", the author states that "the field [of technology] has evolved from notions such as tutorial programs and technology used as tools to accomplished learning tasks to more integrated phase that emphasizes discursive and intercultural competence" (2005).
ReplyDeleteTherefore, using technological tools, make students feel much more identified with the classroom's dynamic; and at the same time a more engaging and attractive class is made. Despite that fact, technology should not be seen as an end, but as complementary medium of the classroom training.
On the other hand, the just use of technology as a set of images, empty web pages and videos; should not be considered as an authentic enhancement of the leaning process. In this case, when a teachers decides to include any multimedia tool as a complement, they had to have set the aim of it early. Consequently, the teacher should be the guide who established the path to follow in order complete the class objectives.
Finally, as teacher I will create a video in which ,indirectly,a topic is covered; avoiding the repetitive and simple pattern of the direct teaching. I mean, rejecting sentences like "this is a pen" or "this a dog", to teach vocabulary; but instead of that, using real life situations that led students identified with the material content, taking advantage of their background knowledge in order to shaped a concept or an image in their minds. It is extremely necessary recognizing what can be done to persuade students attention; and one useful way is using top-down strategies in the EFL classes.
I liked this tool a lot for two reasons: first, sometimes it is difficult to find accurate videos online to bring to class. By using it we can create our own videos taking into account students´characteristics and likes. Second, videos are a great way to introduce new topics or vocabulary, because it improves the listening skill. I would use this type of video as a warm up activity in which students are asked to identify vocabulary for example. Another way I will use it, is as a group final project. I would teach them how to do it and then ask them to create their own video in groups. This would be a totally different way to assess their comprehension and make the learning process meaningful for them.
