Mini-Project #8: Podcasting

The seventh short project consists of the creation of a podcast.
Click the player below to listen to my podcast concerning the instructions to this project.

Seventh Project Breakdown:

  1. Create at least 2 podcasts on either your blog, wiki or web site for the grade level the rest of your projects are based on.(2%)
  2. Your podcast content should be created for the specific course/lesson you have based all your past projects on. (1%)
  3. Creative exercise to go along with the podcast such as answering questions or filling in a chart after listening to ---for example --- a short story (1%)
  4. Be creative and original in your content. (1%)
  5. Podcaster(s) need(s) to use clear English articulation within grammatically correct English structures. (1%)
Notes:

(1) It is recommended to use Audacity for the audio editing program which may be downloaded for free at this website: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

(2) I will leave the podcasting copies at the UCR copy center this Wednesday afternoon (November 6th).

This project is due on November 22nd.

  5. The Podcasting project was so useful for me. This project gave me a lot of ideas that I can use with my students in order to improve their language.
It was the first time that I worked in the creation of a project like this; nonetheless, I have to say that it was a wonderful experience. I really recommend it for the rest of my colleagues.
Nevertheless, I think that this project may be improved for the future groups in some aspects that I will mention. First, the Professor can give the instruction to students that they have to include music to it, in that way they will develop some abilities regarding to that. Then, students can record that in pairs, it will give them the opportunity to interact with his/her classmates during the creation of that conversation.
According to Forcier in his chapter Learning with Word Processor Tools “These programs may require an investment of time or training to take full advantage of their many features as well as continual use to maintain skill level” (p. 232) Definitely I agree with the author because he mentions that as teachers it is necessary to have a knowledge regarding the use of different programs that can help us with the teaching- learning process. However, it is necessary to comment that as teachers we have to promote the investigation; due to, if we don´t know how to use a program we have to investigate how to do it. It happens to me with this project.
To conclude, I would like to mention two different activities that I will use in my classes. The first activity is to assign to my students a homework in which they have to create a podcast because of that they will work in pairs and they will develop a role-play based on topic that we studied; for example, leisure activities. The second, activity will be a listening quiz based on the podcast that I will create for them. Students will use a hard copy of the questions and they will answer based on the podcast.

  6. Listening skills are something that a lot of teachers are leaving behind during class. I have seen students who don’t understand an audio track because of the lack of practice during their English class in high school. Podcasts are a very useful tool to enhance this area in foreign language students. As teachers, to record our own voices, is a great idea to help our students to practice listening skills, since is our own voice they are used to hear during class. I would like to use podcasts to create audio tracks in order to make evaluations, like listening quizzes or a listening part in a test. I also would like to use it during class to make daily practice, making my students practice not only listening skills, but also speaking skills.

  8. In my opinion, from all the projects we have made, podcasting is the most useful. This is because it provides us the opportunity to create our own audios and listening activities to be implemented in the classroom. Taking into account the limited number of available listening resources we can make use of when teaching, it becomes a great tool because it allow us to create audios about any content anytime. As well this tool can be used to improve the student’s pronunciation by making guided activities focused in this aspect. Another advantage about this tool is the bunch of apps it posses that can be used to improve and make your audios clearer and more attractive for your students. I would like to use podcasts as time saver when planning my lessons because I could spend less time looking for audios and listening activities in the net. Besides I would like to implement this tool for creating activities, practices and evaluations that will improve student´s listening and speaking skills along the learning process. For example I would use podcast to work on pronunciation by creating an audio in which they can listen to the correct pronunciation of the vocabulary words we could be studying in order for them to practice at home. Also I would used to create audios for listening exams where I can use only the vocabulary and the topics covered in class in this way the students will follow the audio in a better way

  9. During my training as a teacher and second language student, listening activities are pretty much the same. These drills are mainly activities in which the professor plays a CD track or cassette and students listen to a robot like person speaking, which is far beyond what real life conversations are. Now, CALL offer a variety sources or applications in which listening exercises could be addressed differently. One of those, as a matter of fact, is podcasting. A podcast is “a digital medium consisting of an episodic series of audio, video, PDF, or ePub files subscribed to and downloaded through web syndication or streamed online to a computer or mobile device”. This tool provides a new perspective on how to create more appealing and real like situations for students to practice their listening.
As a future teacher, I think that podcasting would me my lessons a lot and provide a different way to develop listening and speaking drills. First of all, I will use this application for students to improve their listening skills. How? Well, I will use podcasting to record native speakers talking about certain topics; for example, describing their community, which is a MEP´s topics, in this case students are not only being exposed to native English speakers, but also to cultural aspects that the speaker brings when describing his/her community; it is possible to record, conversation or interview tasks that could be either between native English speakers or with the teacher as well; these activities could be followed by a series of exercises related to it.
Secondly, one useful way to use podcasting is in oral tests. When students have an oral test students feel threaten by the environment; this situation completely affects students´ performance. A way fix this problem would be by means of using podcasting. The teacher can assign student to record themselves on a specific topic during a given time and once recorded create a link, burn a CD, etc to give to the teacher. By doing this students will be comfortable enough to do greatly in the test! This is definitely something I would like to try!

  10. One of the most useful tools we have used so far is, in my opinion, the podcast. Podcasting is interactive, useful, interesting, and can also be used by the students as they can create their own podcast; I would say, it is as well, a trendy tool that our students will enjoy. Many people all over the world are using the podcast for communication; that is how through its use students will be in contact with the real world, in contact with people just like them; hence, they are also practicing English. Richardson (2010) points out how easy is to use it “the underlying technology here is digital recording and the idea that it is now very easy to create and publish these recordings” (p. 115). With podcast we can have our students tuned in the topics we want, they will think it interesting and helpful. Also, sometimes is difficult to find the material and information we need in order to cover all the topics we have to cover, so that we can create our own material with the information needed. I would use it as a way of a radio station, in Costa Rica, such a thing as high school radio stations are not very common but to create a “podcast radio station” in which students can listen to news or interesting facts about the topic that is being taught; soy that they are practicing their listening skill. Also, can be use as a project, so that students have to record themselves, in a way of role playing, pretending to be in a TV show, or that they are news anchors or even famous people; in this way they can practice their speaking skill.

  11. Podcasting is the project I liked the most. I had some experience with podcasts before but never for educational purposes, however, after reading about the many uses that podcasts may have, I am convinced that it is a powerful tool for us to teach and for students to practice. Richardson (2010) give us an excellent example of how to use podcasting for teaching, when he mentions that "world language teachers could record and publish daily practice lessons that students could listen to at home or (...) could download to their own MP3 players" (p. 117). That is a great way for students to expand their learning by listening to a recorded practice at home, where they can listen to it carefully and as many times as they need, as contrasted by classroom time where the options are limited. I will definetely use this option for example for listening comprehension in oral exams, since sometimes we need a specific kind of practice or vocabulary but it may be difficult to find that specific content in books or the Internet. Thanks to tools like Audacity we can edit our own recording, add music, sound effects and other details in order to make them more attractive for the listeners, in this case, the students. It's important to remember that podcasting is so easy and accesible that even the students can create their own recordings and share them with the class, which will be an interesting and innovative way to encorage their own learning. As I said, I for sure will keep use this method to present content to my students and motivate them to record their own audio, and at the same time remind them that technology can be used to grow not only as learners or teachers, but as humans.

  13. Podcasting is one of the projects that I consider it the most useful for two reasons. The first reason is that, Podcasting can be used to record a variety of topics. As stated by Will Richardson (2010) “there are many ways that teachers can bring the genre in the classroom. World Language teachers could record and publish daily practice lessons” and this is way I consider it so useful. When doing my practicum teaching I always found myself so limited when finding effective listening exercises to play in the class. The problem with online listening exercises is that sometimes they require of a really advance English command, and for lower grades, it is really hard to find audios that fit their level of English, Also, the variety of topics is really limited, and even though we could find audios related to a specific topic, we cannot find that audio track that really matches the topic, vocab and structures our class is oriented. By developing podcasting we can create our own listening exercises, using the vocabulary structures and adequate grammar structures to our grade level. Also, podcasting could be a great alternative when developing students pronunciation or intonation patterns in the target language, since teacher could provide a set of sentences to record, and as an assignments students could record themselves, and put those recordings in a specific website, and teacher could evaluate each student's performance and also provide feedback to improve their development of their speech. The second reason is related to the accessibility of podcasting since in a high tech word all students and teacher have their own recording devices on their cellphones, computers, Mp3s or iPads, so we could bring these devices to the class and take advantage of technology and produce our own listening exercises, this is supported by Will Richardson (2010), the only devices you need are a digital audio recorder, and some web space and your project is ready to run. In conclusion, it is a great app to improve students' oral performance.

  14. The podcast and the goanimate video are the two more useful projects we developed. Both of them help us when teaching listening activities. Some times we spend hours searching for an audio that fits what we want to learn. Take as an exmple class room commands, which by the way was the topic we covered in our projects, if you look for materials in the net you would realize that it is a few available. So, with this tool, we can create our own audios to assess the listening skill. At the beginning, I thought that creating a podcast was harder, but now I am convienced that creating a podcast is not that hard. Maybe the most difficult step is to have a creative to portray it in the audio, but managing the technological devices and software is pretty easy.

  15. I think that a podcast is an useful tool we have in our hands. Everybody knows that the use of techonology in schools is increasing a lot. Our students like to use it so we as teachers have to take advantage of it and use a lot technology as possible. Podcast is easy to create and the most important thing is that we can record the information we want, sometimes we spend many hours looking for an audio that could contain the information we need but it is almost impossible. we can use the podcast as teachers but also to encourage our students to use it but how the author of the reading "Blogs, Wikis,Podcast, and other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms says: "I think you need to experience what you are asking your students to do- not only so you can support their technical use, but also so you understand what web publishing really feels like.(Richardson pag 117) so it is a tool in which the teacher and the students work together as a group or team. The podcast helps in listening and speaking skills because in the case that the teacher gives them it, they work in listening but if they do their own podcast they improve the speaking and pronunciation. I as teacher will use the podcast but in the case that they have to do their own; so they can work on pronunciation so they can listen to themselves and improve as much as possible.

  16. With no fear of doing wrong, I have to start this comment with a : Podcasting rocks! And this merely for the power a podcast audio can have in such a short time. I have been trying to find ways in which students can practice speaking out of class. Because we, as teacher, can have a class full of speaking tasks where students perform, correct and improve in real time practice and keep some more time consuming exercises for homework. But, what happens when it comes to practicing speaking proficiency? If we can enlarge the practice time our students have that will lead to great results in a shorter time. However, the idea of speaking alone in front of a mirror doesn't seem to be a favorite for students. So, when I heard of Podcasting and its speaking hallmarks, it really called my attention. A space where students can talk about whatever they want and then cast it for teachers and anybody else who might want to listen. That's real time speaking practice. Also, another essential characteristic of Podcasting that called my attention is that it is so simple to use. As Richardson (2010) argues, "it is now very easy to create and publish these recordings" Of course it is easy. And I am sure my students will love it. I am already dreaming with my students creating their own "radio station" and talking about a variety of topics that goes through the roof. Finally, to the question I heard from a student once of how to practice speaking at home, my answer would be very simple now: Podcasting.
