Mini Project #2: Word Processing

The second short project consists of the creation of a Word Document with Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). Begin this project by first reviewing the basics of Microsoft Word and the Youtube videos which illustrate tricks to add different elements including pictures within WordArt as well as inserting a Youtube video within a Word document via ppt. Also note the detailed instructions on creating hyperlinks within a document posted below the videos.

Second Project Instructions:

Develop one lesson on your choice of topic (hopefully one you are teaching now or will be soon) and create a Word Document in order to teach the topic.

This mini project should have the following aspects:
• Use at least TWO of the following items within the document: Drop Cap, Pictures, and/or Clip Art (1%)
• Use at least TWO of the following items within the document: SmartArt graphic, Chart, and/or Table, (1%)
• Uses a picture within WordArt(1%)
• Includes at least 4 hyperlinks (1%)
• Embed 1 Youtube video (1%)
• Creative and original on one specific topic which is focused towards a particular language skill (1%)

This second project is due on September 13th and must be presented to the class on said date. Each group has 10 minutes MAX to present their project to the group giving the class a 6 min critique on each project.

The hyperlinks I am more interested in seeing, which is of the most use for you and your students, is when you link an image, word or phrase that will transport the user of your document to another section of your document with further info concerning the said link. For example, if you wish to teach numbers, you may choose to hyperlink a picture showing two ducks. Once the student clicks the image, it will transport the user to another page within the document which shows the number "2" and maybe a sentence with it in context..."The two (2) ducks are swimming in a pond."

Create a hyperlink to a location in the current document or Web page

To link to a location in a document or Web page that you created in Word, you must mark the hyperlink location or destination and then add the link to it.

Mark the hyperlink location

You can mark the hyperlink location by using a bookmark (bookmark: A location or selection of text in a file that you name for reference purposes. Bookmarks identify a location within your file that you can later refer or link to.) in Word.

Insert a bookmark

In your document, do the following:
  1. Select the text or item to which you want to assign a bookmark, or click where you want to insert a bookmark.
  2. On the Insert tab, in the Links group, click Bookmark.
  3. Under Bookmark name, type a name. Bookmark names must begin with a letter and can contain numbers. You can't include spaces in a bookmark name. However, you can use the underscore character to separate words — for example, First_heading.
  4. Click Add.

Add the link

  1. Select the text or object that you want to display as the hyperlink.
  2. Right-click and then click Hyperlink on the shortcut menu.
  3. Under Link to, click Place in This Document.
  4. In the list, select the bookmark that you want to link to.
If you have any questions or doubts, send me a Facebook message, and I will get back with you within 48 hours or less.

  1. In the last years the use of technology and innovations have involved all of us in that "tech life". Since children are very little they seem to know how to use cell phones, IPods, computers among other devices. Personally, technology has pushed me more and more into the use of more thechnological devices in my own education since I am still majoring in teaching English. Technology have changed the way people communicate, interact, learn and study. I can say that the way I manage my learning process have considerably changed the last few years. I use more technology as a student and the way I communicate with my professors, classmates and frieds, the way I look for information and submit projects have greatly changed. Personally, I would consider CALL more that a tool for teaching a method itself for the teaching-learning process. CALL provides chances to use visual aids, speaking, reading, writitng, and listening exercises as well as the oportunity to analize and apply the acquired knowledge. One example of the use of technology is Word Processing which could be a very accurate way to provide summaries of difficult topics to my students. For instance, I would provide a summary of third person singular -which is a topic that has given all of us, as learners of a second language, a hard time. Then, based on this summary I would ask my students to solve an exercise on line or to bring the sentences to the class using the structure in order to correct them all together, of course in the case we have previously selected a Word processor that allows us to print it at school or somewhere else and without losing the original format as it says in the reading Learning with Word Processor Tool. Besides in the Reading Learning with Word Processor Tools, page 228; the reading mentions Collaborative writing. For me this is one of the most powerful ways to inhence writing skills, since everyone can compare and share ideas about related to the reading.

  2. During my training time as a teacher, I have seen Word Processor as a instrument for the teacher, no anymore. Whenever I thought about using Microsoft Word, I thought about using it to help myself to create printable-worksheets, to write lesson plans, and to do the tests; however, the idea of implanting tasks, even a lesson, in it for students to manipulate the program by themselves never crossed my mind before.
The insertion of CALL in today’s classroom had had great benefits in students’ learning process. Nowadays, Word processor goes hand to hand with learners’ technological enlightenment. One of the CALL principles advocates enhancing more interactive, and catching methodology, which results to be one of the features this kind of systems offers. According to the reading “the user can navigate through the document, adding, deleting, finding, replacing, inserting, and moving information at will” (Learning with Word Processor Tools, page 221). Then, it is based on such statement that the word processing functionality is understood as a tool for students as well.
There are two different ways in which I would like to implement Word Processing systems in my class. One way would be having the projection of a word document that enlists different drills in regards to the topic studied, and the whole group answer each exercise. In that way, students help each other, create discussions, and interact among them. Another way to use it, It’s assigning homework to students; in this case students will be asked to create a word document in which they express what they have learned in class. It could be adding images or videos, inserting graphs, forms, smartart, whatever that helps to convey meaning.

  3. I consider that this kind of interactive tools enhances the student-teacher connection because both have to follow a process in which the student needs to complete a task and the teacher serves as the guide in completing such task. Relating this with my personal life as a teacher, surely a Word Processor resource will help the students to feel closely identified and they’ll experiment a different environment since the use of this kind of methodologies is not traditional. If I had the opportunity to prepare a sort of material by using this tool, I’d do it with the purpose of teaching a new target content. I think that doing so, would be catchy for the students and it would also be a different way to present a topic. They always have to read boring books or copies, but if I use the Word Processor with images, organized sections with vocabulary, grammar and videos and even online games, they could perceive the topic in a very different way as well as they’d learn faster which differs enormously if I just used a traditional methodology. We as teachers must take advantage of technology as much as we can but also we should we aware of the importance it has to serve as guides for the students during their learning process as it was stated by Reinking & Bridwell-Bowles (1996) “Nevertheless, research also indicates that using a word processor does not by itself improve student writing. Rather, the teacher has a critical role in guiding the writing process, providing feedback, and encouraging revision”.

  4. Undoubtedly, students love to use the computer and interact with their classmates through it. Taking this aspect into consideration each teacher must adequate his/her lesson plan in order to motivate his/her students by the use of these technological appliances.
The reading Learning with Word Processor Tools argues that a word processor is a tool that enhances an individual´s personal productivity. Absolutely, I can confirm it because it happens to me during the teaching practices; some of my students understood in an easy way by the use of a software that I implemented with them. As a result, they worked in an excellent manner and permitted them to achieve their goals.
I would like to use this word processing with my students in a Lab section where they will study vowels. So I will include a clear description in the word processing and at the same time some practice for them.
Also I will use this word processing with my students in order to covert the topic about preserving the environment and I will bring them homework through this word processing and in that way we will contribute with the environment because we don´t have to use papers there.

  5. Nowadays we should look at technology as the synonym of improvement. In other words, there is not real improvement if there is not technology in between. This is true in all fields, particularly in education. Children are born with a particular and innate ability for using technology, but is education that field in charge of fostering its use, not only the use but the correct use. That is exactly what CALL is all about, to make correct use of technology on the basis of education. There are plenty of tools available for teachers, but not many use them. In my experience as a high school student none of my teachers use technological devices, not even professor at the university are using those facilities; for example, only two professors are fully using the Smart Boards but the others used them as a place where to project information. When it comes to Word Processor, and thanks to this course, I have found a new and rich way of applying it on classrooms.
The first example on how to employ Word processor in daily activities is through the use of a technological booklet, having the explanation of the topic and practice at the same document; this will help students to focus even more because Word has the tools for making the booklet engaging. The reading “learning with Word Processor Tools” (page. 221) establishes that “the user can navigate through the document, adding, deleting, finding, replacing, inserting, and moving information at will”. Another way in which I could use Word Processors is from an administrative perspective; “Material, once designed, can be easily modified to serve a similar purpose in another unit of study” (learning with Word Processor Tools” page. 227). Finding the correct material is sometime difficult, and if we had a material that might works perfectly but we just need to modify it we could do it by using Word Processors. At the end Word Processors are, nowadays, as important as a blackboard.

  6. Nowadays, people are in contact because of the use of technological devices that let them share information in an easy way. Because of that, we, as future teachers, must be prepared in order to offer relevant information to our students and improve their knowledge and interest to learn English as a second language. One problem that we could face is that we are not accustom to use technology in a lesson plan for high schools maybe because we did not have the opportunity to use any kind of program during the development of our classes when we were in high school, but now, we have to change that methodology and help our students to learn more than what is asked by the MEP programs. What we can do is to start implementing different tools in our lesson plans as word processing, since it is a good way to present a topic because we can add, for example, images, videos or links that offer clearer information about that specific topic, in that way, we can show how important it is and also to motivate pupils to be more interested about English.
Many teachers think that using this tools would not be useful, but it depends on their interest to change the class; because it is important to remember that “the word processor supports writing instruction by making the writing process less tedious, there by encouraging a far more positive attitude toward writing and motivating students to experiment with the language” (Learning with Word Processor Tools. P, 228). It means that this kind of strategies are not just for having an interesting class for our students, but also a good way to implement the use of English language in a dynamic way.
We have to be aware of the use of this programs because we are going to guide our students during the teaching-leaning process. A relevant point is that we should not overuse any kind of strategy or tool, although it is creative, in our class because it would be boring for our learners.

  7. I think that word processor is one of the best tools technology has for us. You can do almost anything with word and it is very helpful in the field of education and research. The use of word documents to guide your class or to ask students for homework enhances student´s motivation and creativity. As stated in ´Theory and research: interaction via computers´(pag28),¨the language needs of today´s students are complemented by effective use of computers and internet, which can provide highly motivating, multidisciplinary problem solving techniques and the tools to prepare students more effectively for their future roles in a diverse world¨. Knowing how to use word tools helps us to make easier our teaching since we may have all our class activities in one single document and helps the student to understand better since he can relate language to images and even sound. In word we have a platform where videos, audio, and images can be added to support any topic. I would use it to have videos, activities like word search and project them in the wall which sometimes are difficult and messy; by using word processing you gain more control of the class. I would also use it to present images and relate them to concepts, there are lots of activities that are enhanced by imaginary and it is easier to manage this material in a digital document.

  8. Most of the time, we misconceive the uses of word processors. When we think about these tools, we just see them as programs to edit texts. However, when you study deeper the functioning of word processors you can actually realize that the benefits of using word processors are many. According to a website called Education.com it among the benefits of word processing have, we could mention that these processors really save time since you could modify your old documents and create more innovative ones without the necessity of creating new ones. Also, another advantage we could atribute to word processors is that they allow to share your documents with your students and colleages in an easy and handy way. The way I would include word processors in my class will be as a way to reduce the amount of paper wasted when printing. I consider that as teachers we should also enhace the protection of the environment. By saving sheets of paper, we are saving a lot of threes from being cut. Sometimes, many teachers argue that is difficult to create a single e-mail where you could get all the homework, or that just the teacher is the one checking the homework, However, an alternative way opf dealing with this, will be the use of Google docs. This is a really useful tool that could help to promote an easier access to the digital documents. another advantage of this Google tool is that you can share your documentss easier since all the students who receive an invite from the owner of the paper could also look at the papers. According to Dickenson, 1986; MacArthur, 1988 word processing tools will enhance peer review, "Other elements of the word processing environment are thought to aid student writing. The public nature of the screen display may prompt
students to read each others' work and so promote more peer review and
editing (page 250). Therefore, peer corrections, online work, and teachers feedback would enhace cooperative learning in writting tasks which is really useful to improve writting. Because of that I consider it is as a really good tool professor could use when developing their lessons.

  9. Technology is one of the major advances that we as a humans had achieve... Now kids almost are born with a microchip how easy is for kids to use technology with any explanation! Technology hasn't only changed how we communicate, how we research or how we interact with people! It had also changed how we learn and study.... Technology is part of our daily live, and the tolls that provides to us as a teacher and to our students are I limited, the CALL program is a sample of this! How has evolved during this period.... Word and all the office tools are almos the right hand of a teacher just a little example to create exams, hand out and worksheets... But not only for that what will teacher will do with out power point presentations, videos, music etc, thata are amazing tools and really important for the students learning process! (P28). Now with all of this tools related to thse learning a language process we cannot only teach a language moreover a culture! That's why word can not only be use to create exams or handouts, also can help to present a topic, to show facts, pictures, to creat a story and vocabulary. How we apply technology can significate a huge change in our students learning process.

  10. The key in using a word processor tool for teaching, relies on simplicity on the eye and an easier way to understand things from a visual perspective. When working with this it is easy to organize information, to highlight relevant facts, to arrange information in tabs per categories, i.e. a grammatical structure, the use of verbs, making interactive evaluation worksheets ,and others. In "Learning with Word Processor Tools". P, 228 we find another very important advantage from using word processor tools. It says the follow: "word processor tools can enhance the individual's productivity" meaning, we as teachers can go further on our production by copy+pasting information from different websites, arranging the information in different forms and using tools as word/smart art, inserting pictures and others, which will enhance the learning of our students by making it more complete and more catching. Word files are easily shared. You can post it on facebook, send it by email, carry it in a flash drive and even share it on dropbox and/or skydrive, which makes it easy for teachers to give it to students, to use it as a learning tool per se for them, to make real use of CALL and not only as a tool for us to make plans or keep track of attendance. Word files are inclusive. If you have vision problems, you can always zoom it up. You can work at your own phase and you can edit it in a way that is better for you, like with font colors, which gives you certain power when working with it. Since I've mentioned many benefits of working with this tool, of course I'll use it for teaching. How? Well, I'll make work sheets to share on the places or ways mentioned above, then ask it back solved by the students and give feedback by usong different font colors, and the useful comment tool. Another way to use it, would be to teach grammar. i.e. when teaching present progressive I;d do something like: SHE IS playING, having the pronoun, conjugation of the verb to be and the -ing part of the gerund highlighted, with a different font color and capitalized, aiming to cause a visual effect in the students which -hopefully- will get deep in them and will learn it in a better way. It's a combination of visual effects.

  11. As we know word processing is a technological resource that has an impact on education. It is important for us because it helps us to teach and cover different topics in a funniest way. A teacher can use it to support any kind of directed instruction or constructivist activity. We know that students like to use technological devices and they really enjoy a class using technology because they are boring about the common classes, so, there are some reasons we should use word processing as a part of our classes for example: it encourages students to pay attention and be interested in the classes, they would like to participate more using it.
Also, It saves time and money to teachers, the author of the reading “learning with processor tools says: “teachers create some written classroom material that changes very little from one year to the nex”t (page 227) so if we need to change something we just do it, also it could happen that we did not have time to cover all the material in that case we just change it instead of creating a new one; Also you do not have to pay a lot of money printing images or documents.
I think we as teachers have a lot of wonderful tools that can help us to do a better job, in which both teachers and learners have fun during the learning process.

  12. Nowadays, the use of multimedia tools is vital to support our classrooms. Different computational programs have been created in order to help teachers to do their job. One of the most useful tools is the word processor, although there are several type editors in the market, in our context, Microsoft Office Word is the one people use the most. Word processors can be used in several ways due to their flexibility to be adapted to different topics. Moreover, it is easy to modify the content and to include images, forms, tables, graph and arts. As Forcier indicates on the reading, Learning with Word Processor Tools, on page 227, “material, once designed, can be easily modified to serve a similar purpose in another unit of study. By using a word processor, the teacher could develop a few standard templates and then make appropriate changes as needed”. Therefore, word processors are convenient tools for teaching, since we as teachers can freely include content and modify it, as well as, save it in our computers or share it with our colleagues. Word processors can be include in our classes in different ways, personally, I might use word processor to present list of vocabulary or reading comprehension, due to student can also insert comment or answer question using the word editor, but also I might promote for my student to do a short word project in which they summarize information about a topic or present to me a report on their daily work, for example, to write a journal or diary for the written class, in which the include pictures or fact to support their report.

  13. As the technology has improve during the years, the demanding for the teachers have increased as well. We have to be prepare to use the technology as a tool to facilitate our classes and to get students attention. For this reason the use of a tool like work processor is an advantage in the learning process because as Frocier "The user can navigate through the document, adding, deleting, finding, replacing, inserting, and moving information at will."(p.221) So, you are able to insert many images or hyperlinks which facilitate to move among the document instead of scroll it down. By using the word processor, teachers can challenge the students to work independently and even to create their own processor to present their interest topics.
Another advantage of this kind of tool is that teacher can save money and reduce the amount of paper consumed because this tool is completely paperless. One clear example of this is my experience with the word processor about Tourist attractions in Costa Rica. This is a topic which needs a lot of input from the teacher, specially what relate to vocabulary. This vocabulary have to be as real as possible, as a result, the use of colorful pictures is obligatory.
As a conclusion, the use of this material is useful to generate in the teacher creativity. Also, it challenge us to be more innovate and always look you new ideas to impress our students.

  14. Our society has experimented the development technology has led us to; using it as tools, in such a variety of products. Throughout a short period of time, specifically in the last 15 years we have seen how new tools are greatly useful in many ways. Consequently, we have used it in many ways for particular tasks, one of them it's for educational purpose. Its ideal to have the economical resources to provide every student with the means to make use of this kind of technology. Teacher must provide closed supervision as well as guide students throughout the process on how to use each tool.
Word processing tools are more likely to be used in classrooms where students know how to manage this tool for his/her aid to facilitate the learning, on the other side the teacher's role would become more of a moderator among the students, where students solve their tasks Online or using a word processing tool to edit, create, change and so forth. Bringing this tool to English classes must create a negative effect over the people who are not used to manipulate this technology. So then, it would be also helpful to provide the right orientation and instruction to those who are "less technological" so that they become part of the development of this technology and also learn to take it in their advantage.
Taking granted there is a Laboratory, a teacher might provide practice for students using this tool; or Google docs which is another helpful tool to give student the task of creating a story, so that they improve their writing skills and become more accurate in their grammar. Likewise, listening and writing skills could be tested by playing students a video related to a specific contextualized subject where the teacher ask students some questions about general or even specific details about the video.

  15. First, I want to highlight the fact that office programs are simply a great tool to make a more attractive work when creating didactic materials. Those tools provide a wide range of options that goes from making a worksheet to making a poster to thread transversal themes into the classroom.
Second, the main difference, and great advantage, that this tools offers is that can be used offline. According to the reading "Web pages in service of L2 learning", "you need a wired or wireless Internet connection via modem (which uses the phone lines to reach a computer node)". So, the main requirements to use online facilities is the need of having Internet connections available; and in some (not to say most) public schools there is no guarantee of having Internet connection. In this sense, there a clear advantage with the office programs inasmuch as different multimedia material can be included in docs, pptx or ex documents, and all this offline.
Third, when using the word processor, teachers should be aware of the goal and objective that he or she tries to reach when making new material. Besides making well detailed and prepared material, the teacher should use this programs to arrange and manage students' lists, diaries, notes, among others.
Finally, it is important to close saying that Word, as well as all office programs, must be included in the most do list of teachers. Those useful programs have evolved so that people can simple make a new document from the palm of their hands; cellphones and Ipads are expanding the use of this tools professionally; meaning this, that professionals, from all different fields, take advantage of that extremely easy access to the web.
